Kanazawa to Kyoto: Train, Time, Cost & Tsuruga Transfer (2026)

Traveling from Kanazawa to Kyoto is straightforward, but it is no longer a direct train journey. The fastest standard route is the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tsuruga, followed by the Thunderbird Limited Express to Kyoto.

How to take the train from Kanazawa to Kyoto

1. At Kanazawa Station, board a Hokuriku Shinkansen toward Tsuruga.
2. Get off at Tsuruga Station. Keep your ticket and follow the signs for Limited Express trains.
3. Transfer to the Thunderbird Limited Express for Kyoto or Osaka.
4. Exit at Kyoto Station. The station connects with local JR lines, the subway, buses and taxis.

There is currently no direct train from Kanazawa to Kyoto. The through Thunderbird service changed when the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga opened in March 2024.

Is the Tsuruga transfer difficult?

For most travelers, no. The connection was designed for passengers transferring between the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the Thunderbird. Follow the overhead signs, keep all paper tickets together and move directly to the Limited Express platform.

• Allow the connection time shown on your official itinerary.
• With large luggage, use elevators and avoid stopping near gates.
• If you have four or more paper tickets, JR-West advises using the staffed gate.
• For paper tickets plus an IC card, insert the tickets first and then touch the card as instructed.

How much does Kanazawa to Kyoto cost?

A regular reserved-seat journey commonly costs roughly ¥7,500–8,000, but the final price depends on the service, seat and booking conditions. Treat this as planning guidance, not a guaranteed fare.

Eligible international visitors may also find a HOKURIKU One-way Ticket. JR-West currently lists the Kyoto City–Kanazawa adult price at ¥6,500, subject to eligibility, purchase conditions and availability. Check the official ticket page before buying.

Should you reserve a seat?

Reservation is strongly recommended during cherry blossom season, Golden Week, autumn foliage, weekends and New Year. It is also sensible if you are traveling with children, carrying large luggage or need to arrive in Kyoto by a fixed time.

You can buy tickets at a JR ticket office, compatible multilingual ticket machines or the JR-WEST Online Train Reservation. Always check the train number and both segments before payment.

Can you use a JR Pass?

Coverage depends on the exact pass you hold. The nationwide Japan Rail Pass and some JR-West regional products may cover the relevant JR segments, but seat rules and valid areas differ. Do not assume that every Hokuriku or Kansai pass covers the entire Kanazawa–Kyoto journey. Check your named pass on JR-West’s official rail-pass page.

What if you have large luggage?

How early should you leave Kanazawa?

If Kyoto is your main sightseeing day, leave Kanazawa in the morning. If you have already booked accommodation in Kyoto and want one final Kanazawa experience, visit Omicho Market early or choose a short walking route before taking an afternoon train.
